Great post and blog. Automotive is clearly inspiring more pharma companies such as Novartis, whose head IT person proclaimed just a few months ago that the company wants to be pharma's Toyota.

One of our regular contributors, API specialist Girish Malhotra extended the comparison with automotive in a recent editorial. He argues that generic manufacturers in India and elsewhere are optimizing process chemistry (analogous to redesigning engines) to come up with less expensive manufacturing processes, and that Big Branded Pharma needs to do the same, but isn't.

Of course he's talking about small molecules, but as more companies outside of the U.S. (e.g. India's Biocon)get into biopharm, they're likely to develop more efficient bioprocesses as well. (His article is at http://www.pharmamanufacturing.com/articles/2007/106.html)
